The first project of the second sem was the family interview project. In our new semester we would focus on immigration, later with the MUN debates, the immigration policy project, etc. And so to start thinking about the idea of coming from someplace else and moving somewhere, we were given the project by Matt called the family interview project. Wewere challenged to look into our own lives, specifically looking at our family and ethnic background. We were to create a family interview, in which we'd interview a relative or a parent about how our family got to be living in America. It was very interesting for us to learn more about our own lives, as well as getting to share our different backgrounds with the class.
My Project: I chose to interview my dad about our origin and why we went to America. From my background knowledge on our family, I knew that my dad was the one that really pushed through with us living here. There were of course no details in the story of coming here, but I vaguely was aware of the hardships he endured coming here for his passion for music. I had the following set of questions for him to ask.
Improvements made? There weren't many times we got to showcase a draft of our video. I just got tips from my dad to maybe add pictures of him in the beginning or background music in the introduction as well. Reflection: I thought this was a good way of helping us ease into the idea of immigration. It was sort of fresh into the second sem and we didn't know anything about immigration. I thought it was smart for all of us to learn about ourselves and to get with the idea of immigration at the same time. I enjoyed learning about my dad's journey here. I had said that I knew vaguely about the story. But because of this interview I was able to really look into the things that happened, the feelings he had, and even how life was for him at my age. It really made me reflect upon our lives here, and it made me thankful for him and my mom for making the sacrifice to stay here in a totally foreign country. It was hard to edit and ended up being longer than I thought, but overall it was an interesting thing we did. I learned a lot.
Future? I honestly wouldn't changes anything for this. I was happy with how it turned out and I think that if it were any longer, then it'd be just unnecessary.
