Model United Nations is a simulation of the UN General Assembly and other multilateral bodies. In Model UN, students step into the shoes of ambassadors from UN member states to debate current issues on the organization’s agenda. While playing their roles as ambassadors, student “delegates” make speeches, prepare draft resolutions, negotiate with allies and adversaries, resolve conflicts, and navigate the Model UN conference rules of procedure – all in the interest of mobilizing “international cooperation” to resolve problems that affect countries all over the world.
Topic: Immigrants fleeing from War, how to accommodate for them?
In our class we were given different countries and were required to do research on it. The main problem we were given to focus on was IMMIGRANTS, how it would affect our countries, what we should do about it, our solutions, conditions, etc. With research to prepare us, we were required to know our country's financial condition, how much immigrants they intake, and what a substantial resolution to the problem of immigrants would be.
My Country: Turkey!!
Research: A lot of research was required for this, not only about immigration, but about our country itself. I had so many different articles and links for my research and there was a lot of deep research that had to be done. I had to research about laws, about immigration, policies about entering a country, other country conditions, and about basic knowledge of Turkey.
The document below has all the links I used to find my information. Following it will be the Country research paper.
Improvements Made: The main improvements that had to be made was about my resolution or position paper. It was probably the most difficult thing, trying to create a solution that people would agree on and that would work and be beneficial to many of the different people. Matt helped me a lot with getting the best solution, and it really required to think rationally about each side of the problem and the countries involved. I had to change the position paper many times. Another thing that had to be changed a lot was the length. We had to have it about 2 pages, no more or less. You would think that it would easier to make less, but actually there was so much important information that I couldn't write it under 3 pages. But eventually I was able to cut stuff.
Reflection: This was probably one of my favorite projects of this year. The most enjoyable part was the actual day of the MUN conference. It was a lot of work and digging for research for the project, it's probably what made it so stressful at first. I didn't have much knowledge on Turkey or the MUN or immigrants, so it was so many new things coming to me at once. But soon after really deep research like reading articles, talking to people, etc, it really got me to understand. I really took the project seriously and I think that helped in creating a solution, for it is a real life problem that I believed could be fixed and should be fixed. Of course we couldn't really do anything but it was the idea of helping people with ideas that got me fixed. I really connected with my country, Turkey. Having no previous knowledge, I didn't know what to expect. But I really got to know Turkey by heart and found all the information and facts about it. Now when I see Turkey on the news or on headlines I think, wow it's my country. Even though it was just a project I still feel involved when something comes up about Turkey, since I know so much about it and I had tried to make a realistic solution to a problem it was involved. I feel that I have learned the most in this project, about many different things, and I will forever remember the day of the conference. I thought that everyone did well and that everyone seemed more engaged than usual. The whole idea of it was exciting and scary at the same time, it felt good when everyone was starting to work together. It is probably the only project where you are on your own. At least it's up until that day, then everyone gets to put their minds together to find a solution. I think it was a successful project.
Future? I don't think I'd change much if I had the chance to do this project again. It was definitely something I felt happy with and I thought everyone did well.
